Autistic teen artist creates masterful sketches with help of photographic memory

Sixteen-year-old Yap Hanzhen of Malaysia apparently suffered through a childhood in which even the most simple of communications was difficult. Hanzhen’s parents say he barely spoke through most of his adolescence.

Like many children who display difficulties communicating during early development, Yap turned out to have a form of autism – a fact that his parents struggled to convince doctors and child psychologists, who were apparently quick to presume simple bad parenting as the source of young Yap’s speech difficulties.

In taking the special needs care of their young son into their own hands, Yap’s parents gave him a sketch book and pencil to help him associate thumbnail drawings with words for everyday objects, inadvertently nurturing a latent talent that would eventually see Yap touring the world, showing off his extraordinary drawings.

By his own admission, Yap’s sketches benefit from the boy’s “photographic memory,” which allows him to remember extremely fine details of things he’s seen up to 24 hours after leaving the scene. Yap takes great care in his sketches, preferring 3B or softer leads that enable finer gradation and, we hear, other cool stuff that’s way over our heads.

Yap’s works were chosen for display at the Asia ParaArt Tokyo competition in Japan, and the boy has even published his works in his own compilation book.

According to the young artist’s website, about one in ten people with Autism display some type of “savant” talent. While Yap’s primary talent may be drawing, he’s also interested in music and wants to be both an artist and a musician when he finishes school. Yap says he spends six hours a day on schoolwork, and as many as six hours a day on his art.

For comparison, we spent six hours yesterday watching cat videos on the Internet.

Enjoy the beauty of Angkor in your underpants thanks again to Google Street View

It seems Google Maps and Google Street View is truly unending in their quest to walk around and take panoramic photos of some of the Earth’s most beautiful locations. So far we’ve witnessed the eerie wonder of Gunkanjima and the spectacular sights of Mt. Fuji’s summit all courtesy of Google. And now we are treated to a place found on many people’s bucket list: Angkor, Cambodia.

In a six month period Google has sent its Street View cameras in to chronicle over 100 of the area’s historical sites and deliver it straight to you. Naturally Angkor Wat is there for you to tour. The most famous of Angkor’s landmarks, it’s even printed on the Cambodian flag.

But that’s just the tip of the historical beauty in the region. Just take a stroll through The Banyon and get a close look at the many beautiful reliefs carved through out.

You can even stand atop a pyramid in Koh Ker found in a remote region of Cambodia that’s hard to traverse due to landmines. It appears that didn’t stop the Google crew, nor did it this guy in flip-flops.

And there’s still a whole lot more in this tour using 90,000 images. It could take considerable time to go through click by click, so if your the busy type who wants it quick and dirty, there’s a promotional video and menu of quick links below.

So why not take a moment or several to soak in the rich arts and engineering that has survived over a millennium from what is believed to be the world’s largest pre-industrial city.

How cute does a girl have to be before she’s forgiven for using a stolen iPhone? This cute

Not so long ago, if you were travelling overseas and someone swiped your bag or camera, you pretty much had until you left the country to crack the caper. Unless you happened to be carrying a cargo of priceless gems in your tote bag, the local authorities weren’t going to coordinate an international search and recovery operation with you once you’re back in your home country.

Things are different now, when so many of the gadgets we take with us on vacation are linked to cloud storage services and social media accounts. Such was the case of one Japanese traveler who goes by the Twitter screen name Matsumoto Hiroki. Matsumoto, who lost his iPhone on a trip to Bangkok, was able to track down the person using it through iCloud, which is when his story got really interesting.

Matsumoto decided to escape the cold snap that hit Japan at the end of last year by taking a trip to warm, tropical Thailand for a few days. However, his trip hit a snag when he lost his iPhone on December 29. The now Apple-less traveler sent out a tweet saying that anyone trying to get in tough with him should try his Gmail account instead.

▼ Only a full schedule of speaking engagements in the afterlife prevented Steve Jobs from finding the time to rise from the grave in fury.

By January 5, Matsumoto was back in Japan and armed with a new iPhone 5c. He was also able to determine the location of his previous phone, finding it had travelled quite a distance from Bangkok, where it had last been in his possession.

Since Matsumoto’s previous phone was still linked to his iCloud account, he decided to see if its unauthorized user had uploaded any pictures. The snapshots Matsumoto saw were very different from what he’d been expecting, though.

In Japanese media, there’s a pretty common image of how thieves look. They’ve usually got a stubbly beard, a cabbie’s hat, and always wear sunglasses.

▼ Literally the first Google image search result for dorobo (Japanese for “thief”).

Obviously Matsumoto doesn’t assume each and every criminal looks like that, but still, we doubt he expected this.

This put the Japanese traveler in a bit of a quandary. It’s doubtful the Thai police would have the time or idle manpower to accommodate a request to bring the girl to justice. Plus, Matsumoto had already purchased a new iPhone. He didn’t need two, and he wasn’t going to be able to get a refund for his new unit.

But while Matsumoto had a smartphone, something he didn’t have was a girlfriend. While the woman’s possession of his old iPhone was a legal grey area, his opinion on her looks was much more cut and dry. In Matsumoto’s own words, “Her pictures are really cute, so I’m not sure how to handle this.”

“Maybe you two are meant to be together!” one of Matsumoto’s Twitter followers joked, to which he responded, “She’s so cute, I want to tell her ‘You can keep the iPhone as long as we can be fiends!’”

▼ Aside from companionship, a relationship with the girl would, through her selfies, provide glimpses into areas usually off-limits to men, such as the women’s restroom.

Deciding that he didn’t stand to lose anything more, Matsumoto decided to act in his impulse. He translated the offer into Thai, and set it as the lock screen message on the iPhone the woman had been using.

With the proposal made, Matsumoto settled in to wait for the next photo uploaded from his old phone. Would Matsumoto’s gamble pay off?

Unfortunately, no. It looks like Matsumoto isn’t going to be able to tell his kids the charming story of how he met their mother when she bought his smartphone on the black market, as his overture of friendship, was met with a barrage of photos of a young man.

Like most men, Matsumoto’s magnanimous generosity doesn’t extend to other members of the Y-chromosome club, and he promptly cancelled service on his old phone, along with excluding it from access to his iCloud account. It’s a shame he came away from his experiment in international amnesty with nothing to show for it, but let this be a lesson. Crime doesn’t pay, especially when it happens to you.

Does “ Goldfish Salvation ” ring a bell? Japanese artist, Riusuke Fukahori, changed the way we look at goldfish with his super realistic 3-D paintings created by painting on layers of clear resin.

Inspired by Fukahori, Singaporean artist Keng Lye, too, started creating a series of intricate 3-D painting masterpieces which he has named “Alive Without Breath.” See his lifelike paintings after the break!

Now internationally famous, Riusuke Fukahori’s claim to fame is his unique style of creating extremely realistic goldfish paintings by using acrylic paint on layers upon layers of clear resin, resulting in 3-D paintings that are so real it looks as if the little fishes froze in time.

Artists are constantly inspired by sights and sounds around them, as Fukahori got inspired by his pet goldfish. His stunning art in turn became an inspiration to Keng Lye, an artist based in Singapore. Applying the techniques made famous by Fukahori, Keng Lye has expanded the possibilities of the art and created not just 3-D paintings of fishes, but other aquatic animals such as octopus, shrimp and terrapins.

How he manages to create the parts that seem to be above “water” level boggles me to no end. Although Keng Lye has yet to gain worldwide acclaim comparable to Riusuke Fukahori, his artwork definitely matches up to that of the goldfish master, at least in the eyes of this artistically challenged writer.

Indonesia’s Google Street View car guilty of three hit-and-runsLast week on September 14, Jakarta’s police managed to catch up with an AWOL fender-bender felon. This particular culprit was a bit too high profile to fly under the radar for long, especially considering the panoramic mapping equipment attached to his car!

Always eager to bring users up-to-date and detailed information, Google’s fleet of Street View cars have become a familiar sight on city avenues across the globe. Unfortunately, one such surveyor had a major bout of bad luck and poor judgement on the Indonesian turnpike.

Reports say that while collecting roadside data in Bogor City, a suburb of Jakarta, the Google vehicle accidentally rear-ended a minivan. Not yet resigned to his life on the lamb, the worker tried to atone for his mistake by accompanying the damaged van and its owner to an auto repair shop. Unexpectedly, the driver then made a break for it, leaving the smashed-up jalopy behind. The perpetrator later gave a statement explaining that he tried to run away out of fear of the high repair costs incurred by the collision.

He must have been remiss in his driver’s training however, as during the man’s mad-dash for freedom, he ran into yet another minivan! Undaunted, he again decided to drive off without answering for his crime. The accident-prone motorist finally resigned himself to his fate after hitting a third and final truck. He let himself be taken in for police questioning and an investigation shortly thereafter.

This may be a good lesson for those of us too dependent on Google’s GPS feature. Use extreme caution when checking your map app because you never know when a rogue Street View car may come barreling down the road and total your ride.
