Extravagant Wedding at the Ritz Carlton Pacific Place

From the incredibly grandiose custom lace and tulle bridal gown to a bouquet that literally glowed throughout the night, every inch of Yumiko and Iwan’s wedding could be described as both extravagant and beautiful. The luxurious celebration took place at Ritz Carlton Pacific Place where the couple said “I do” in front of an extraordinary wall of white roses. The wedding was photographed by none other than Apertura , who specializes in elevated, artistic imagery — an exceptional choice for capturing Yumiko and Iwan’s day.

Editor’s Note: Hello dear readers, we hope you are having the best holiday season yet! We are wrapping up 2013 by sharing some of our favorite real weddings of the year, and this stunning Philadelphia wedding was impossible not to choose. It’s an event dear to our hearts as the bride is none other than our wonderful Junebug member photographer, Susan Stripling , and her love is fellow photographer, Cliff Mautner . These beautiful photos were captured by Mary-Beth Tyson Photography and Daniel Kudish of Davina+Daniel , and once we saw them, they quickly won our hearts!

The Couple: Susan and Cliff

The Wedding: 4.17.2013 – Front and Palmer , Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The Goals: We didn’t want to have everyone else’s wedding. Cliff has been a photographer for over 30 years and I’ve been shooting weddings for 12 years. But we didn’t want to be different just for the sake of being different. With both of us entering our second marriage we wanted to honor each other and our children from our previous marriages as well as our family and friends. Our main priority was just to have everyone together – it was really that simple. Something beautiful and honest, simple, timeless, and enjoyable.

The Design: I’ve had 12 years of watching other people design their weddings and I knew very clearly what I wanted to do, and Cliff felt the same. Along with Brian Kappra of Evantine Design we chose the clear ghost chairs and long farm tables. I provided an image of what we wanted the chuppah to look like. And other than that? It was all Evantine. We spent a few hours with Brian choosing the china and I hired a calligrapher to do the place settings but otherwise the execution of the vision was all him. I think the only direction we gave him was really a lot of fire and we don’t really like flowers. Simple, clean, dramatic, and nary a mason jar in sight.

The Look: My style inspiration was simply to find something beautiful. I had no clear idea what I was looking for, but when Debbie Walp at The Bridal Garden showed me the Monique Lhuillier “Candy” dress during a trunk sale that was it – it was simply the prettiest dress I had ever seen. Once the dress was decided everything came together really easily. I hunted down the Rodarte hair stars that I’d been admiring for a few years and found the perfect McQueen clutch – I’m a huge Alexander McQueen fan! I got a beautiful wrap from Carol Hannah and was all set! My husband wore an incredible suit from Tom James – a dear friends husband works for Tom James and he helped us with the whole process. He looked AMAZING. Our daughters wore Jim Hjelm , Watters , and Amsale and they chose their own dresses and colors. I really didn’t care what they wore as long as they were happy!

The Moments: The day was beautiful and the decor and details impeccable, but while lovely, wedding planning details do not make a marriage. The biggest success was that we could officially call each other family. Everything else pales in comparison. That being said, coming down the aisle towards Cliff was one of the most beautiful moments of my life. I was supposed to walk to an instrumental version of “Into the Mystic” but Cliff had our band show up early, set up hidden away behind the chuppah, and they sang “Falling Slowly” (our song) as I walked towards him. That was a moment I will never forget. Seeing my youngest daughter cry during the ceremony because she was so choked up. Dancing with my father. Dancing with my brother. All of our friends who came from so far to be near us. It was really, truly, honestly perfect.

Take a look at this amazing winter wedding planned by Devoted to You Inc. at the Carlu in Toronto. Their post-ceremony ice skating portrait shots are absolutely adorable! We dedicate this post to all our couples planning a wintertime wedding, even if it is only August!

Peach, Pink and Coral Winter Wedding at The Carlu in Toronto, Ontario – Sara and Gerry

The Goals: We wanted our wedding to be timeless. We didnt want to look back at our pictures and think what were we thinking? Instead, we wanted to see the wedding the same way that we did on the night of our wedding. We picked the Carlu as our venue because we felt a connection to its history, and then tried to make all of our décor choices to compliment the venue.

The Design: Our wedding was full of personal details. My hands were in each and every part of the wedding, from the vases, to the wedding programs, to the candy bar, but the most important element of our wedding was the venue. We really wanted to get married somewhere different, a place that the majority of our friends and family had never been to. Gerry and I have been to so many banquet hall weddings, all of which have the same feeling about them, so we wanted to spoil and surprise our guests, so that they could really enjoy and have a great time at our wedding.

The Look: Both Gerry and I absolutely love clothes, so we wanted our wedding garb to reflect our love of style and fashion. I went to at least ten different wedding ateliers to find my dress and Gerry knew from the beginning that he wanted a custom suit. We also LOVE shoes, so we knew that our shoes had to be one of the highlights of our outfits. Gerry stuck with one pair of Cole Haan shoes that he knew would be comfortable for day and night, and I bought a pair of grey/blue patent leather Prada pumps for the day, and a pair of gold sparkly Jimmy Choo’s to dance the night away in! I bought my Prada’s before I had even bought my dress, knowing that I couldn’t possibly get married without them. I made sure that the dress matched the shoes!

The Moments: Our favorite moment of the day was when we went skating at Nathan Phillips Square. We went there without our bridal party to take photos and get footage for our wedding video. Complete strangers were congratulating us and asking if they could take our pictures to post on Facebook. Our photographers were worried about us falling, but both Gerry and I are excellent skaters so we were able to do many rounds of the rink. When the ice patrollers started blowing their whistles, we thought maybe we were in trouble, but it turned out that they were just clearing the ice for the Zamboni. That gave us the perfect opportunity to skate out in the middle of the ice to be alone for a kiss and some great photographs!
