D-Frag! Episode 8

It’s not exactly a date…

What They Say:
Takao offers to treat Kazama as payback for helping her escape the teacher interrogation over the zipper-shot. Could this be a DATE in disguise?! The two sense dark energy while in the pre-sale line for her favorite video game series…

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
With D-Frag having finished out the whole competition in the last episode after spending two episodes on it, which was too many, the fallout from it has now come into play. With Takao having squeezed herself into a tracksuit that was too small for her bust, which resulted in a zipper-gate kind of situation, the situation has escalated to the administration side of things and they have to respond to it since once it gets to that level, they can’t just let it slide. Kazama and Takao are brought in together with this, along with the couple of punks that are trying to cause trouble with it, but they’re not alone in the complaints with how so many people ended up having a problem with it for a variety of reasons. Luckily for Takao, Kazama finds and out for her so that she doesn’t really get into trouble.

While the tracksuit wearing teacher’s past is mildly comical, it does allow Kazama to remind her of the issues that do come with tracksuits and that there really is a lot of durability to them. She’s had herse for quite some time and the whole thing is pretty quickly swept under the rug, though there is the simple cuteness of telling Takao to not have a zipper issue anymore. Baggy tracksuits for all! But because of what Kazama was able to do for her, Takao feels the need to repay him, which is certainly understandable. And that means she’s asking him to go out with her during the coming weekend so he can treat him to something. You can see that she’s just wanting to do the right thing, but there’s obviously more to it as well as she’s felt close and comfortable with Kazama for some time.

Of course, her planning doesn’t go well as it turns out that when the “date” is planned is for when she needs to be in line for a new game that’s coming out. She’s not happy about it, but the game is what draws her in and she gets Kazama to go with her in the end, which isn’t his first choice but he’s trying to do right by her. Even if it means suffering through learning about the game from her. Amusingly, and not surprisingly, others are there that they know, which includes Roka and a host of cosplaying types that are causing plenty of trouble that gets Kazama caught up in it all against his will in order to protect Takao. It’s fun to watch it play out and I would have enjoyed more time without Roka there just to see Kazama and Takao together as I enjoy watching them together.

In Summary:
After a couple of less than interesting episodes that did have some bursts of laughter with how it played out, D-Frag has a pretty fun little episode here overall. While the show won’t recover completely based on what they did here, it’s definitely more fun and more of what I wanted out of the show once we got some of the basic relationships down. It also further reinforces that I simply don’t care for Roka and her group of characters as they exist, mostly because they really don’t get much time and when Roka does dominate, she’s not exactly all that interesting. Takao and Kazama have really become the reason to watch the show, but they’re stuck in Roka’s world for the most part.
