Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
With some stronger and more engaging episodes as of late with what it’s been doing, both in story elements and bringing in the American character Robert, Doamayger-D has been hitting its stride. With this episode, Daijirou gets a letter from gramps who is in the hospital and in the old school scroll he receives a history lesson on the Doamayger. Going back to the Houei era and having fun with the animation and visuals, it’s a cute piece to showcase what happened back then as a sweet shop owner. It’s surprisingly mellow overall, very laid back, but has its own comical old-school quirks with how the Doamayger was built.
In Summary:
The origin of the Doamayger isn’t too big or flashy and it really doesn’t feel like it needs to be. There’s a generational side to it that’s nicely presented here and that gives it a stronger connection for Daijirou to work with while likely adding to his sense of pride. I do like that it goes back to do what it does, but after some stronger episodes recently this one feels like a sizable slowdown overall. I’m not sure that the show really needed the backstory, though it’s welcome to have.
