It may just be a matter of timing, but it’s hard to be too terribly upset about a clip show recap at this point in the game. Hunter x Hunter has a hell of a lot of manga to work through to be sure so it does seem odd to bring in a recap this quickly into its run, especially as it’s still working through the first main arc of the series. But with the episode arriving on Christmas, reduced viewership and other little things like that, spending time to go back and showcase what has come before is somewhat par for the course. And if you want to try and catch some new viewers, this is definitely the day to try and do it since most TV series are ending for the season already and an ongoing can take a chance at capturing a few new eyeballs.

In Summary:
Hunter x Hunter works the recap game in decent order here, but it doesn’t really set itself apart either. It works through the general idea of having the story related so far to Gon’s aunt about what he’s gone through so she can catch up on things. It hits the key points easily enough but it doesn’t really have anywhere near enough time or appropriate clips to make the characters stand out well. We get to see the diversity of the world but the traps and tricks don’t resonate well in this short order form, especially since they’re gone through quickly and fairly well skimmed over. There are some decent moments to revisit, but with the whole thing being just a rapid fire series of clips when you get down to it, it’s not even the kind of clip show that you can easily recommend to new viewers to try out. We love the show, but if you’re in a lull between seasons right now, we’re recommend just watching the show from the start and getting into it from there.
