Muromi-san Episode 6
What They Say:
One day, Mukoujima Takurou, a boy in high school who loves fishing, catches a pig tailed mermaid called Muromi-san who speaks in the Hakata dialect. She comes to visit Takurou often, along with her fellow mermaids Sumida-san, Fuji-san, Levia-san, Hii-chan, and even some other fantastical creatures such as Yeti and Harpy!

One of the things that surprises me the most with this series is just how much I enjoy the way it expands the scale of things, realistically or not, early on in each episode. We’ve seen a good deal of the world’s “secret” history when it comes to the mermaids and that’s made them pretty much immortal, according to Muromi. But with this one, we get a very fun if serious piece by Takkun as he talks about space and its expanse but shifts it down to the larger mysteries of the worlds oceans, which naturally involves Muromi and the creatures there. And a particular fish that’s just caught, an oarfish, who just craves stability in his life and complains a lot about it.
With a background given for these particular kinds of fish and what they suffered under the reign of a group called the Ryuuguujou as they were treated essentially as slaves, Takkun makes a surprising discovery while shopping for a new fishing rod that the woman who works at the bait and tackle shop is the “evil” Otohime who used to lead that group. She tries to cover up who she is but keeps making mistakes with it as Takkun traps her with some of what he says and asks. Otohime is fun to watch since she’s so reactive to things and has an exaggerated view of how things are going to go once she realizes what Takkun is all about, and that just leads to more chaos when she ends p seeing Muromi and expects everything to go even worse. The two taunt each other in such hilarious ways and have such different views of how their worlds work that it just gets into a big old mess of hilarity.
In Summary:
While we’ve gotten introduced to a variety of other mermaids over the first half of the season, I definitely liked the introduction of Otohime. Muromi may have been the one to do some of the initial talking and exposition about her and her people, but there’s a lot of narration by Takkun here that helps to differentiate the episode a bit and his involvement with Otohime hits the right notes since he sends her into a panic, kind of likes it, but then panics himself when he puts her and Muromi together and realizes just how big of a problem it is. Otohime brings a different flavor of fun to the show than the other women we have so far and she’s definitely one I want to see more of, though in smaller doses overall like this.
