As the bad guys of this story haven’t come across as terribly powerful or menacing, though Luffy and the others got taken out in a way that just makes them feel a bit lazy or out of practice, things ramped up a bit with the super weapon that was introduced in the previous episode. That’s certainly one of the ways to compensate for an increasingly stronger and more powerful array of members in the Straw Hats as it gives them something a little different to compete against rather than just more and more powerful opponents that pushes it to the level of ridiculousness. Though this arc hasn’t completely won me over, it’s been an interesting and fun arc that feels like a diversion more than anything else. And those can be pretty welcome, though I hope for something larger to come from all of this.
With Caesar’s weapon out there in full now, the big ass piece of candy it is, combining up with the massive pink jelly monster that’s there as well, the show takes on a comical yet dark tone as the whole thing starts coming together. You halfway expect things to just go wrong in some way, and there’s almost a sense that it will, but as the combination of the two things really starts to take effect and come to life, it just gets more and more disturbing. The confidence that Caesar exudes at first is what sells it to begin with, but as the jelly monster transforms and more of its actual capability spreads out and starts to impact the people that are out there on the surface, the quicker the realization of just how dangerous this new weapon is beyond the worlds and imagination of what it can do is.
While the show spends a good bit of time with these random nameless characters and the joy that Caesar gets from it, we also get the few Straw Hats that are on the run from the weapon and its effects, which is certainly comical since they’re so intent and based on their history, they definitely know how to run. It has some good lightness to it that I’ll admit might frustrate me in other shows but works rather well here. This bit is fun as is the way Luffy and the others watch it all unfold since there’s little they can do at the moment. But what helps to make it even more fun is watching how Chopper is trying to figure out the way to try and help everyone since he’s still on the loose inside of the headquarters. Chopper’s still a difficult character for me to get behind completely, but he’s absolutely winning me over since he hooked up with Trafalgar.
In Summary:
The unveiling of the weapon and its effects on various people and the landscape is pretty nicely done, and you can certainly see how it would be an impressive weapon in a populated area you want to take down quickly and effectively. It doesn’t feel as powerful as it should here overall, but it works to proper effect and sets the larger stage well for what Caesar is up to and th ekind of threat that he is. The smaller moments are the winning ones here with the Straw Hats and the Navy characters and what they’re doing and going through, especially towards the end with the way Luffy and the others are getting ready to get things moving on their terms again, which is always where the real fun starts.
