One Piece Episode 612

The fight continues on, though it’s just more of the same this time around again.

What They Say:
The showdown is on between Zoro and Monet! But can he bring himself to face down her chilling beauty? Meanwhile, Mocha is on the run from the rest of the children, trying to keep the candy from them, but the gap is closing quickly!

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Though there were interesting moments in the previous episode as we get information on Momonosuke the dragon that made for some fun when it comes to Luffy, it was mostly a huge info dump that bored more than anything else. But the show did hit some interesting moments in its final minutes as it round up events with others to show where they are and the kinds of fights they’re engaged in, including the really nicely done one where Robin gets hurt and Zoro goes after the winged enemy in a big way. That gets everyone back on the right path once again and recovery happens quickly, though it shifts into something a bit darker as the kids in the area start going nuts when they find the candy in front of them, with one of the kids running off with it at Chopper’s instruction.

One Piece brings in a bit more of the back story here with the kids, where we see Caesar and others welcoming some of the kids, and it’s all easy to see how they manage to draw them all in and win them over early on. But it’s also not all that interesting, especially at this point in the game, because it’s pretty obvious that the kids were tricked into everything quite awhile ago and fell for it easily enough considering their age and mental state. Some of it is mildly interesting, but again I find myself cringing when Caesar and his sound is one screen as it drives me batty. Thankfully, it’s not a huge portion of the show as more of it is spent in the present, but the flashbacks continue to be one of the few aspects of One Piece that frustrates me so.

There’s a good bit of action to the episode overall, though it’s more of the same in a way as it’s a lot of running around, to and fro, getting into trouble and running away from trouble. Some of it makes for a good time of course, and there’s comedy to be had as well, but the serious side with Zoro works nicely until it turns comically horny as all the Navy men that he’s with get a really good look at her and admire what she is, even if she is a harpy. The show can turn from this kind of comedy to serious action on a dime and One Piece does that well, giving us another moment of that with the Navy men before it shifts once again to something more seriously.

In Summary:
One Piece continues to move along but we get another episode in this overall recent chain of episodes where there’s a lot going on but very little truly happens. There are some fun scenes to be had here overall, a touch more flashback that reinforces what we already knew or supposed and a whole lot of running around. It has its enjoyable moments, and there’s no Momonosuke in this episode at least, but it’s just kind of there. It’s all competently done but I really think it’s the kind of episode where if you skip it, you won’t really miss anything when it comes to the arc as a whole. Which is unfortunate as most episodes should have something noteworthy in them.
