Pupa Episode 7

More WTF!

What They Say:
The “life-and-death sibling” story follows Utsutsu and Yume Hasegawa, a boy and his little sister who find themselves all alone. One day, Yume sees a mysterious red butterfly and her body undergoes a strange metamorphosis—into a creature that eats humans. Utsutsu struggles to find a way to restore his sister.

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Pupa went for the really twisted and weird in a number of ways angle in the previous episode, which of course means the show can seemingly go anywhere after that. With this episode, we get a bit more about Maria as we see her as a child, her general lack of empathy and the way she just can’t seem to really read people and what they’re going through. When she says she’s intent on creating a monster child, it’s not just a dark moment, but one that has a different kind of malic about it that creeps you out. Pairing this with Utsutsu talking about Yume and her issues just adds to the way the people involved here are so well matched for each other.

There’s some intriguing time with Maria and the guy who is working with/for her as he talks with her some while she’s in an underground bath. He’s just a little off in some ways, kind of parental and protective, but also just perverted as well, which leads to a comical moment with the cat. But you have to like Maria as she stands in the bath and the first thin she puts on his her hat. It just says so much about her and how weird she is. Of course, that she bathes in pretty much the same area as another of the monsters that are there is even creepier. But hey, those last two or three seconds just puts the icing on the cake.

In Summary:
I continue to think that Pupa is basically a short-form anime series meant to troll fans in general by doing things that it shouldn’t. It works with a lot of familiar ideas and just goes in weird and bizarre ways while also being strangely sexual and fetishistic. I have no idea what to really think about the show but I adore the way it just sees boundaries and leaps gleefully over them, blood all over the place and all.
