‘The Martian’ Tops Strong Box Office

‘The Martian’ Tops Strong Box Office This weekend was a curious one to see as The Martian was essentially trying to follow the same track as Gravity a few years ago in terms of timing, marketing and overall sense. Though the film didn’t break any records, it largely achieved its goal with a $55 million record, coming up just short of what Gravity did back in 2013 by $1 million. With a fair bit of competition coming in a bit, it’s not expected to hold as strong as Gravity did, but with an A CinemaScore it’s expected to do quite well. The film also had a solid international debut where it did $45 million in 49 territories that it was released in.

This weekend had the expansion game going on with Sicario moving wide and it brought in $12 million for its full national debut. The Walk is getting ready for its expansion as it’s doing pretty much just IMAX runs at the moment, but that hasn’t generated a lot of buzz as it only pulled in $1.5 million. Everest hasn’t garnered the attention it had hoped for either with just another $5 million added over the weekend, bringing it to $33 million since its debut.

The other mini juggernaut that’s out there is Hotel Transylvania 2, which in its second weekend added another $33 million to its coffers, bringing its domestic take up to $90 million.

This coming weekend sees The Walk expanding to 2,500 screens while the big new film that arrives is Pan with over 3,300 screens planned.
