The Updated Locked Language/Subtitle Anime Blu-ray List

This list unfortunately gets updated a bit more regularly than some fans would care for, but it’s a worthy one to bring out a couple of times a year to remind fans just what’s not as accessible as they’d like to be. Due to licensing restrictions placed on distributors in the same region as Japan with Blu-ray releases, some titles find themselves “locked” from being able to change on the fly or through menus the language and subtitle options. For the vast majority of fans, they’ll never even notice. If you sit down and watch it in Japanese with English subtitles and never a dub, it’ll play smoothly and without a problem. And conversely, if you watch it in English and will never watch it with the Japanese dialogue and translated subtitles, you’ll never have an issue. But if you like to sample both tracks, analyze performances and have access to the materials you’ve purchased, you’ll find problems with these releases as you can’t swap between tracks and you cannot turn of the subtitles. As always, it’s a buyer beware issue and one that a dedicated group of watchers post about when new releases come up with.
