Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
After we see the bomber from last volume receive a massive battle mech from a mysterious source, we join Tiger in a bar, where he ends up discovering Blue Rose singing on the stage. He chastises her for not watching out for her health, and then we cut to Tiger and Barnaby talking. Tiger asks why Barnaby became a hero, cuing a flashback in which we see Barnaby’s past. When his parents were killed he turned to the police to find out about the killer, but only just barely managed to squeeze out the information that the man’s tattoo meant he belonged to Ouroboros. In the process he learned he couldn’t rely on the police, and in turn vowed to become strong.
Back in the present, Barnaby meets with an informant, hoping to learn more about Ouroboros, only for the man to burst into flame before he can talk. After talking to the police, Barnaby finds himself the target of the mech from the start of the volume. Since he used his powers earlier, he has no choice but to flee, uncertain of why he’s being attacked. Just when it looks like our hero is about to be slain, Kotetsu steps in to help, fully suited up and ready to go. Though the mech slips away, he is able to catch a glimpse of the man inside, whom he later remembers from the bombing incident. They track the man down and go head to head, only to discover that he is in fact a member of Ouroboros. Barnaby tries to pressure him for information, only for him to once more burst into flames, apparently sent by a mysterious assailant.
Frustrated at his failure to crack the case, Barnaby finally turns to his fellow heroes, and they are able to discover a location where a large number of battle mechs are being produced. When they decide to raid the factory, will their charge end in victory or disaster? And just who is the mysterious man burning Barnaby’s every lead to the ground?
In Summary
With this volume, it feels like the larger plot is finally starting to emerge. With a mysterious organization making its move, along with the links to Barnaby’s past, there’s definitely a lot of intriguing plot points in this volume. It’s also nice to finally see Barnaby and Kotetsu starting to work a bit as a team, and we get an interesting look at the danger of running out of superpowers. Add to that some rather nice action and a villain lurking in the shadows throughout, and you have an entertaining read that really starts to tie the story together. Hopefully the next volume can keep things rolling, as this book is probably the best entry in the series so far.
