Going with something a little bigger in the previous two episodes in order to serve up a little material for Silvia that helps her to stand on her own, Dragonar Academy went through the motions well enough and with some decent action and silly moments along the way. Expanding on the cast is always a good thing and with a character like her linked to royalty, it’s no surprise to bring in some of those family members and positions in order to show what has defined her. Thankfully, the show looks like it’s going to go back a bit more towards one of the more subdued characters of the series so far with Eco, as she struggles with some strong nightmares that are causing her significant sweats that soak the bedsheets. The nightmares are definitely getting to her in a big way but there’s always a little humor to be found when Ash is involved.

With that operating in the background, the show moves forward elsewhere as the training camp is coming up, but it’s something that doesn’t involved Ash and his friends since they’re so new. It’s more for those with a bit of experience and certain skills that are gearing up to go, or at least that’s what they thought. Ash end Eco find themselves now participating in the camp by special invitation, which makes sense considering the unusual nature of Eco in the scheme of things and the need to explore more the unique nature of his relationship with Eco. This leads to some of the usual silliness and uncertainty about things, especially since Ash can’t understand why he’s being invited, but it does all make sense. The unusual thing with this group though is that they end up adding Lucca to the mix, a student that often plays a good deal of hooky at the shcool.

She’s an odd one being a fairy from the forest, one that sleeps in a special bed that’s designed as a coffin, but there’s some neat aspects to her even if she does give us the smaller, softer and cuter character for the series. The focus here turns to helping Lucca as she’s having a problem with her dragon, Gawain, as it won’t let her ride him anymore. Difficulties between humans their parrs aren’t uncommon, but they have to dealt with before it completely falls apart. This filters in as part of the background for a bit and we get some rather decent basic slice of life dragon academy school material, but the addition of Lucca adds a little more to it since Ash wants to help and takes a vested interest in them. It’s all starting to be resolved here in a rather simple way, but sometimes that’s all it takes. And in the end, it serves to bring Lucca into the group and as a more regular character.

In Summary:
Dragonar Academy starts its next small arc here with the introduction of Lucca and her problem while also raising the bar a bit for what Eco is going through. The exploration of the parrs and what they can do is certainly interesting and we’ve not had too much of it overall, which has been a bit disappointing. Gawain doesn’t offer much yet, but the potential is there now that Ash is getting involved, so there’s some hope. The series continues to have this weird vibe to it where it’s not really eager to move forward with its stories in a linear way but rather takes the roundabout route in a kind of lazy approach that makes you wonder for a bit if anything is actually going to be meaningful or useful. Which leaves me feeling that this may be another series that will work much better when marathoned.
