Magi: Kingdom of Magic Episode 10

How will Alibaba do against a giant ape?

What They Say:
At last, Alibaba is facing his first opponent as a gladiator in the Colosseum. However, since he is informed by Shambal that he can’t use magic during the battle, Alibaba has to prove his sword skills to survive the fangs of the great ape Garda!

The Review: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Alibaba’s got his hands full for this patch, as he’s facing a giant I guess ape thing(?) that’s beaten over 100 gladiators prior to this. Not only that, but Alibaba can’t use Amon, the sword and thus the djinn equip. He’s got a long sword provided to him, but he’s trained in using a short sword or even dagger-length blade. He’s surely proficient with the long sword, but less comfortable. When he tries to stab it into the ape, he can’t pull it out. Not only does he not have the leverage, but the thing’s muscles hold on to the sword and only let go once he flexes, thus letting the sword out. The match turns on its head after that move, and Alibaba’s on the ropes. He’s pushed back and beaten and grabbed by the ape. When Hulk threw Loki around in Avengers? It’s like that, but gets worse.

Alibaba gets a flash of life when he remembers a time when Cassim’s sister was caught by some mean person in the slums when they were kids. To a kid, that adult was just as scary as the monster is to Alibaba now, but they pulled out of it. This time as well, Alibaba’s got a plan and stabs the ape through the mouth. Now, it’s not about fighting. It’s about living.

The bloodbath of Alibaba v. the ape is over, and the crowd goes wild. It kind of explains the entire savagery of the people in this world that were just a minute ago yelling “Kill him!” They’re cheering him now and it’s always an interesting dichotomy to see.

The aftermath of the match is something quite interesting, and reminds us why Alibaba would do well as a king. He gets a lot of prize money for the match, but doesn’t know what to do with it. So he buys the freedom of the ape, just as he did to the slaves of Jamil. The ape, once a beast, looks upon Alibaba like a boss. He has an aura about him, like most shonen leads, to rally people around him.

In Summary:
The moment with Alibaba and the ape was probably the best in the episode, because the giant once grotesque and now-cut up ape looked kind of cute in the way only an anime monster can. Not much happened in the episode in way of really anything, as that fight could have been half the length if that, but Alibaba finally cured what ails him and he and Cassim are working together once again, this time as magoi inside of his body.

There’s another gladiator at the ring that I haven’t mentioned yet, named Shahrazad (like the Magic card! I’m spelling it like the Magic card as well, instead of the convoluted subtitle spelling Crunchyroll used). She has three fanalis guards under her employ and, when Alibaba’s story starts back up, we’re sure to see them play a big role. But it serves as a good transition into Morgiana’s story, which seems to be starting next episode. And good thing, I’ve missed my favorite character!
